MLB: Pittsburgh 3, New York Mets 2 (11 inn.)

PITTSBURGH, July 12 (UPI) -- Jordy Mercer singled home Andrew McCutchen from second in the 11th inning Friday, giving Pittsburgh a 3-2 win over the New York Mets.

The Pirates scored twice in the first inning on a home run by Pedro Alvarez and could not manage another run until they got to Gonzalez Germen (0-1), the Mets sixth pitcher who was making his major league debut.

McCutchen opened the 11th with a five-pitch walk and stole second. Russell Martin was intentionally walked with one away and Gaby Sanchez struck out, giving the Mets a chance to extend the game.

Mercer, however, sent a grounder up the middle to bring home Alvarez.

The win went to Vin Mazzaro (5-2), who struck out two in the top of the 11th. Pittsburgh has captured two in a row after losing four straight.
