Vinci takes first-round win in Palermo

PALERMO, Italy, July 9 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Roberta Vinci advanced in straight sets Tuesday despite suffering six service breaks during a first-round match at the Italiacom Open in Italy.

Vinci got by Giulia Gatto-Monticone 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 in a match that saw 13 breaks in 21 games. Each player had four breaks in the first set, which Vinci took in the tiebreaker. Vinci had a 3-2 edge in breaks in the second set.

Neither player won more than half the points when serving.

Fourth-seeded Klara Zakopalova needed three sets to get to the second round, eventually beating Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. She posted three of her seven total breaks in the third set.

No. 5-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino advanced when Alexandra Dulgheru retired trailing 1-5.

Renata Voracova ousted sixth-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu 6-5, 6-2 and Dinah Pfizenmaier got by No. 8-seeded Karolina Pliskova 7-5, 7-5.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova came out a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Kristyna Pliskova, Karolina's twin sister, and will face top-seeded Sara Errani in the second round.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni stopped Mariana Duque-Marino 6-3, 6-3; Karin Knapp defeated Teliana Pereira 6-3, 6-2; Anabel Medina Garrigues got past Kristina Barrois 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; Estrella Cabeza Candela topped Alice Matteucci 6-4, 6-1; Polona Hercog beat Eva Birnerova 6-4, 6-1; and Nastassja ousted Burnett Maryna Zanevska 6-0, 7-5 in other first-round results Tuesday.
