Nico Rosberg takes British Grand Prix after Vettel's breakdown

SILVERSTONE, England, June 30 (UPI) -- Nico Rosberg grabbed a late lead when Sebastian Vettel suffered a gearbox failure and went on to win Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Vettel, the three-time defending Formula One champ and current points leader, appeared on his way to a fourth 2013 victory but blew a gearbox with just 11 laps remaining, allowing Rosberg to grab the lead.

The Mercedes driver held off defending British Grand Prix champ Mark Webber down the stretch to post a 0.7-second win, his second of the year and third of his career.

Rosberg avoided tire problems, unlike Mercedes teammate and pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Sergio Perez and Jean-Eric Vergne.

Webber posted the second-place finish after announcing last week he is leaving F1 racing at the end of the season to join a new sports car program in the Le Mans 24 Hours and World Endurance Championship.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso finished third, Hamilton rebounded to claim fourth place and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the Top 5.
