WASHINGTON, June 21 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama Friday called Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra to congratulate the Heat for winning their second consecutive NBA championship.

In a statement, the White House said Obama "noted the Heat's relentless determination in what was (a) historic season for the team and their MVP, LeBron James."

Obama told Spoelstra he looks forward to congratulating the team in person during the traditional visit to the White House by U.S. sports champions.

Miami pulled out a dramatic victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6 Tuesday to stay alive in the finals and then won Game 7 in a tense duel that was still very much undecided until James scored to give the Heat a 4-point lead with 27.9 seconds to play.

James finished Game 7 with 37 points and 12 rebounds.
