Serena Williams seeded first for Wimbledon

LONDON, June 19 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Serena Williams, who started a tear that has ruled women's tennis at Wimbledon since last year, is the No. 1 women's seed for the 2013 tournament.

Williams will take a personal-best 31 consecutive match winning streak into the first round at Wimbledon, which begins Monday. The women's side of the tournament is scheduled to conclude July 6.

Williams picked up her 16th major tournament title earlier this month at the French Open. Since losing in the first round of the 2012 French Open, Williams is 68-3 with 11 tournament titles, including a victory at Wimbledon last July.

She is seeking a sixth Wimbledon title. Only four players overall -- and in the Open Era only Martina Navratilova with nine and Steffi Graf with seven -- have won more at Wimbledon. Williams previously took championships at Wimbledon in 2002, '03, '09, '10 and '12.

Tournament officials followed the current WTA rankings in assigning the women's seedings Wednesday.

After Williams, Victoria Azarenka, who won the Australian Open this year, was seeded second and Maria Sharapova is third. Agnieszka Radwanska, who lost to Williams in the 2012 final, is fourth.

Sara Errani was made the No. 5 seed and Li Na is sixth with No. 7 Angelique Kerber and eighth-ranked Petra Kvitova rounding out the second tier of seedings. Caroline Wozniacki is seeded ninth and Maria Kirilenko is 10th.
