Dawn Approach bounces back for Ascot win

ASCOT, England, June 18 (UPI) -- Dawn Approach bounced back from his trouncing in the Epsom Derby to win Tuesday's Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in a thriller.

Dawn Approach, under Kevin Manning, was making his move after the sharp turn into the stretch on the Round Course when he was soundly bumped from the inside. He, in turn, pushed Toronado out. Those two then rallied sharply and battled to the wire.

At the finish, Dawn Approach on the inside had a nose in front of Toronado while Mars was well back in third.

The win was redemption for Dawn Approach's first career loss at Epsom, when he dragged Manning to the lead midway through the 1 1/2-mile race and had nothing left for the final furlongs. Tuesday, the 1-mile distance was more suitable and the New Approach colt was more tractable for his rider.
