MLB: New York Yankees 6, Los Angeles Angels 5

ANAHEIM, Calif., June 16 (UPI) -- Travis Hafner cracked a three-run homer Sunday but the New York Yankees had to turn back a late Los Angeles rally to pull out a 6-5 win over the Angels.

Hafner's blast in the third inning triggered a five-run outburst, during which Lyle Overbay and Jayson Nix also contributed RBI.

But it was a Vernon Wells sacrifice fly for a 6-0 New York lead in the eighth that eventually proved to be the game-winner.

CC Sabathia (7-5) posted a third victory in four starts, allowing two runs on five hits over eight innings. The left-hander walked three and struck out six as the Yanks snapped a five-game skid.

He exited in the ninth with a six-run lead after allowing the first two runners to get aboard.

David Robertson entered and yielded an run-scoring single to Mark Trumbo. One out later, J.B. Shuck drew a walk and Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was summoned.

But the likely future Hall of Famer allowed RBI to Erick Aybar, Alberto Callaspo and Peter Bourjos before finally striking out Albert Pujols with the bases loaded for his 24th save.

Jered Weaver (1-3) was tagged for five runs on seven hits in six innings for the Angels.
