Quebec drops ban on turbans for soccer players

LAVAL, Quebec, June 15 (UPI) -- The governing body for soccer in Quebec said Saturday it was dropping its ban on turbans and other religious headgear.

The Quebec Soccer Federation based its decision on guidance this week from FIFA, which said it had no problem with players wearing turbans on the pitch.

"Our goal was always to have confirmation that the wearing of a turban was allowed by FIFA. And of course, we're delighted that FIFA was able to answer our questions and remove any ambiguity," said Brigette Frot, executive director of the QSF.

Frot and the QSF also issued an apology to anyone who had been offended by the ban, which led to the QSF's suspension by the Canadian Soccer Federation earlier this month.

The QSF has nixed turbans for safety reasons and because they had not been endorsed by FIFA. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said FIFA recently issued an approval for turbans on a trial basis, provided they were not a safety issue and were the same color as the player's uniform.
