Sluman leads by one at Regions Tradition

SHOAL CREEK, Ala., June 6 (UPI) -- Jeff Sluman shot a 7-under 65 Thursday that put him one shot in front after one round of the Regions Tradition, the year's second major on the Champions Tour.

Sluman, whose only major crown on the regular tour came at the 1987 PGA Championship, edged Fred Couples by one stroke and was two in front of Duffy Waldorf and Peter Senior.

"I kept the ball in the fairway all day," Sluman said. "The wind was absent out there."

Mark Calcavecchia, David Frost, and Corey Pavin were tied for fifth at 68 while two-time defending champion Tom Lehman was part of the large group at 69.

Lehman, Jack Nicklaus, Gil Morgan and Fred Funk are the only players to win this event more than once .

If Lehman wins, he will join Hale Irwin as the only players to capture a Champions Tour major tournament three times in a row.
