Lehman shares lead on Champions Tour

DES MOINES, Iowa, May 31 (UPI) -- Tom Lehman, still looking for his first Champions Tour win this season, grabbed a share of the lead Friday after one round of the Principal Charity Classic.

Lehman won the yearlong points competition on the tour each of the last two seasons, but has yet to post a victory in 2013.

He shared the lead at 3-under-par 69 with Dan Forsman, Duffy Waldorf and Scott Hoch.

The large group at 70 included major championship winners Corey Pavin, Jeff Sluman, Mark Calcavecchia and Hale Irwin, who on Monday will celebrate his 68th birthday. Irwin holds the Champions Tour record for career victories with 45, the last of them coming six years ago.

This is the 13th year the tournament has been held, but it is being hosted for the first time by the almost century-old Wakonda Club.

Because of bad weather early in the week, many of the players were unable to play a practice round on the course before teeing off Friday. The hilly layout turned out to be a difficult challenge with just 25 players breaking par.

There were 20 scores of 76 or higher with Fuzzy Zoeller turning in an 84.

Three-time defending champion Jay Haas, trying to become only the third player in tour history to win the same event four straight years, opened with a 71. Points leader Bernhard Langer had a 72.
