CONCORD, N.C., May 26 (UPI) -- At least 10 fans were hurt and several cars were damaged by a falling TV camera cable Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, track officials said.
A statement issued by Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup race indicated three fans were hospitalized and seven other were treated for minor injuries and released after a Fox Sports cable fell to the track, ESPN.com reported.
Fox said the "drive rope" for the overhead camera used during its telecast failed.
"We certainly regret that the system failure affected tonight's event," the network said in a statement. "We apologize to the racers whose cars were damaged, and our immediate concern is for the race fans. We also offer a sincere thank you to the staff at CMS for attending to the injuries and keeping us informed on this developing situation."
The race was stopped on Lap 126 after the incident, with drivers allowed to stop on pit road for 15 minutes to repair damage inflicted by the cable.
The greatest damage was sustained by the cars of race leader Kyle Busch and 15th-place Marcos Ambrose, ESPN reported.
Cars returned to the track after a 26-minute delay.
