Kingston has first-day lead on European Tour

VIRGINIA WATER, England, May 23 (UPI) -- James Kingston shot a 6-under-par 66 and owns the lead after Thursday's play at the European Tour's BMW PGA Championship in England.

Kingston had seven birdies and a bogey on the day and is one stroke ahead of Mikko Ilonen.

Lightning in the area led to a 90-minute suspension of play and, as a result, five groups were still on the course when play was stopped Thursday because of darkness. Among those players was Martin Wiegele, who was 4-under through 13 holes.

Scott Henry and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano were able to finish their rounds at 4-under. Six other players are three strokes off Kingston's pace.

Kingston, in the field because of a sponsor's invitation, had a birdie at the par-3 second hole but dropped back to even with a bogey at the next hole.

He posted back-to-back birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 and jumped into the lead with four birdies over the span of Nos. 12-17.
