BALTIMORE, May 20 (UPI) -- Vernon Wells stroked a tiebreaking RBI double in the 10th inning Monday and the New York Yankees rallied for a 6-4 win over Baltimore.
Down 4-3 in the ninth, New York staged a comeback when Travis Hafner belted a one-out solo homer against Orioles closer Jim Johnson, sending the game into extra innings.
Then the 10th, Ichiro Suzuki collected a lead-off double off Pedro Strop (0-2) and scored the go-ahead run when Wells followed by lining a pitch that short-hopped the left-field wall for a ground-rule double.
Hafner later drove him in with a single, and the Yankees went on to record their third straight win in the opener of a three-game series.
David Robertson (3-0) earned the decision with a scoreless bottom of the ninth and Mariano Rivera picked up his 17th save to secure the victory.
Rookie David Adams clouted his first major league homer while Robinson Cano and Lyle Overbay also went deep for the Yankees.
Chris Davis homered and Nick Markakis knocked in a pair for the Orioles, who dropped a seventh consecutive home game and sixth straight overall.
