Craig Lee European Tour's Madeira Islands Open

SANTO ANTONIO DA SERRA, Portugal, May 17 (UPI) -- Craig Lee overcame tough conditions Friday in shooting 4-under-par 68 and taking the lead half through the European Tour's Madeira Islands Open in Portugal.

Lee was among early golfers off Friday in cold temperatures and had a wait out a fog delay of more than an hour and a half.

Because of the weather issues, some players didn't complete the second round, which is to be wrapped up Saturday before the cut is determined and playing order set for the third round.

Lee had five birdies and a bogey Friday and is at 9-under 135 for 36 holes. Peter Uihlein, who was 10-udner through 12 holes, ended the day with an 8-under 64 and is in second at 8-under. Mark Tullo, with a second-round 69, is tied with Uihlein.

Thomas Levet, with a 67 Friday, is alone in fourth at 7-under 137.

First-round leader Lloyd Saltman staggered through a 3-over 74, which included a three-hole span in which he was 4-over, and dropped into a tie for eighth at 5-under.

Lee had a very steady round playing the second nine first Friday. He had birdies at the two par 5s on the second nine and made the turn at 3-under after a ninth-hole birdie.

He had a bogey at the second hole both came back with birdies at 3 and 7.
