Two outdoor NHL games on tap for Yankee Stadium in 2014

NEW YORK, May 15 (UPI) -- New York's Yankee Stadium will host two outdoor NHL hockey games next season as part of the 2014 Stadium Series, the league announced Wednesday.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the New York Rangers would play the New Jersey Devils Jan. 26 and the New York Islanders three days later in the Bronx.

The two NHL games -- the first ever staged outdoors in New York -- are part of a five-contest slate of match-ups to be held in outdoor stadiums next season.

"The innovative nature of the Stadium Series affords the opportunity to have all three NHL teams in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area play, outdoors, at one of the most-recognized stadiums in the world," Bettman said.

The other Stadium Series games on tap for 2014 include the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium Jan. 25; Detroit against Toronto at Michigan Stadium in the New Year's Day Winter Classic; and the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field March 1.
