MADRID, May 7 (UPI) -- Former Real Madrid soccer player Alfredo di Stefano, 87, said he doesn't care what people think about his engagement to a woman 51 years younger than him.
The Argentine soccer legend said he is in love with his Costa Rican bride-to-be, Gina Gonzalez, 36. Di Stefano has been a widower since 2005 and has suffered from age-related health problems that often have him using a wheelchair, ThinkSpain reported Monday.
He said he doesn't care what anyone, including his children, thinks about the age difference.
"What do you think my children would say about it? Maybe they are against it but that is not important to me. They are going to have a go at me but I will take it with sincerity," he said. "I am only interested in my life and in being happy, not in causing lots of trouble."
Di Stefano is known for leading the Real Madrid to five Euro Cups from 1956-60, ThinkSpain said. He won the Ballon d'Or, given to Europe's soccer player of the year, in 1957 and 1959.
