Robson advances on Madrid Open upset

MADRID, May 6 (UPI) -- Laura Robson posted a second-round upset of world No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska in Monday's play at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Robson, playing Radwanska for the first time, piled up five breaks in a 6-3, 6-1 romp. She won two-thirds of the points on serve, even though she suffered a second-set break, and 53 percent off Radwanska's serve.

World No. 2 Maria Sharapova and third-seeded Victoria Azarenka posted first-round wins Monday. Sharapova got past Alexandra Dulgheru 7-5, 6-2, losing her serve once. Azarenka defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who was coming off a tournament win Saturday in Portugal, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-3).

Sixth-seed Angelique Kerber beat Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-2 and No. 7-seeded Sara Errani escaped with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win after a challenge from Sorana Cirstea.

Carla Suarez Navarro, who lost to Pavlyuchenkova in the Portugal Open final, ousted ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 in a first-round match.

Also in the first round, Kristina Mladenovic rolled over Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-1, 6-1 by saving eight break points; and Christina McHale outlasted Peng Shuai 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 in a 2 1/2-hour match.
