THE WOODLANDS, Texas, May 3 (UPI) -- Mike Goodes, a one-time winner on the Champions Tour, survived difficult playing conditions Friday to take a one-shot lead at the Insperity Championship.
Only seven players broke par in the opening round of a tournament played at The Woodlands Country Club and Goodes was the lone player to shoot under 70.
Strong winds sent scores soaring with 11 members of the 81-player field unable to break 80.
Goodes, who became eligible for the Champions Tour seven years ago, suffered a lone bogey at the par-4 second. His only victory came at the 2009 Allianz Championship and he finished third in this tournament a year ago.
Gene Sauers was alone in second after shooting a 70. Brian Henninger, Mark Brooks, Hal Sutton, Michael Allen and Mark Bucek were all at 71 in a tie for third.
Bernhard Langer, who owns a huge lead in the year-long points race on the Champions Tour and who has won twice on the circuit this season, was one of those who struggled in the wind. He shot a 77 while making only one birdie.
