RICHMOND, Va., April 27 (UPI) -- Two Richard Childress Racing crew members were charged with assault following an incident at Richmond International Raceway, police said Saturday.
Henrico County, Va., Police Lt. Linda Toney said the pair, identified as Michael Scearce, 50, and Thomas Costello, 35, were arrested after a "physical altercation" in the infield area of the raceway after Friday's ToyotaCare 250 Nationwide event, The Richmond (Va.) Times-Union reported.
Toney said Scearce, of Mount Ulla, N.C., was charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault, while Costello, of Kannapolis, N.C., was charged with one misdemeanor count of assault.
The pair, who work for driver Brian Scott, were released early Saturday.
Scott, rival driver Nelson Piquet Jr. and their crews got into an altercation on pit row following the race.
Piquet accused Scott of "door-banging" him during the cool-down lap.
"We are cooperating with the local authorities in this matter," RCR said in a statement Saturday.
