NEW YORK, April 27 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jonathan Sanchez has been slapped with a six-game suspension after intentionally throwing at a batter, MLB announced Saturday.
The incident happened in the first inning of Friday's Pittsburgh 9-1 loss to St. Louis, during which Sanchez fired a pitch at Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig.

The 30-year-old hurler was also fined an undisclosed amount.
He has elected to appeal the suspension, meaning he remained on the Pirates' roster Saturday.
Sanchez has gone 0-3 with a 12.71 ERA in four starts this season.
