Garcia-Lopez wins in upset at ATP stop in Romania

BUCHAREST, Romania, April 23 (UPI) -- Guillermo Garcia-Lopez posted a three-set upset win Tuesday in a first-round match at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tennis tournament in Romania.

Garcia-Lopez rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over seventh-seeded Horacio Zeballos. Garcia Lopez dropped serve twice in the first set but didn't allow Zeballos a break-point opportunity in the second and third sets.

He lost just one point on serve in the third set and took 84 percent of the points while serving in the last two sets.

Fifth-seeded Florian Mayer came away a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) winner over Flavio Cipolla with five breaks.

Wild-card entrant Gael Monfils advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Filippo Volandri, also recording five breaks while winning more than half (33-32) of the points off Volandri's serve.

Sergiy Stakhovsky had little trouble in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jaroslav Pospisil in a battle of qualifiers.

Also Tuesday, as the first round was completed, Santiago Giraldo defeated Xavier Malisse, 6-1, 6-2; Victor Hanescu stopped Matthias Bachinger 6-4, 6-4; Tobias Kamke beat Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-1, 6-3; Lukas Rosol eliminated Gilles Muller 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; and Jarkko Nieminen slipped past Evgeny Donskoy 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
