Graeme McDowell edges Webb Simpson in RBC Heritage playoff

HILTON HEAD, S.C., April 21 (UPI) -- Graeme McDowell blew a late lead but rebounded with a one-hole playoff win over Webb Simpson Sunday at the windswept RBC Heritage.

McDowell seemed on his way to a regulation victory but stumbled to a bogey on the 18th, finishing with a round of 2-under 69.

The late gaffe allowed Simpson (even-par 71) to catch him at 9-under 275.

McDowell, however, then parred the first playoff hole while Simpson missed a 12-foot try for an answering par, handing the Northern Ireland native his first win in a regular PGA Tour event.

Sharing third at minus-7 were Luke Donald (69) and Kevin Streelman (72).

Jerry Kelly (71) claimed fifth at minus-6 while third-round leader Charley Hoffman stumbled to a 6-over 77, finishing in a sixth-place tie with Chris Stroud (70) and Russell Henley (69) at 5-under.
