NHL: Calgary 3, Detroit 2

CALGARY, Alberta, April 18 (UPI) -- A pair of goals by Steve Begin in the third period Wednesday lifted Calgary to a 3-2 victory over the fading Detroit Red Wings.

Detroit has lost four of its last five games, having started the ninth tied with Columbus for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Begin broke a 1-1 tie 2:28 into the third and scored again with 7:07 to go. The second of his goals turned out to be the game-winner when Johan Franzen scored for the Red Wings with 2:42 remaining.

Miikka Kiprusoff made 36 saves for the Flames, winners of four out of six. Jimmy Howard allowed the three Calgary goals on just 17 shots.
