HILTON HEAD, S.C., April 18 (UPI) -- Brian Davis, seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour, shot a 6-under 65 Thursday to grab a one-shot lead after one round of the RBC Heritage.
Davis has won twice on the European Tour and he has had six runner-up finishes in the United States. One of those close calls came in this tournament three years ago, when he called a penalty on himself during a playoff which he lost to Jim Furyk.
"It's good in this game to have a short memory, good or bad," Davis said. "I still have people stop me in the street or at the golf club or at airports. People do remember (the penalty), but for me I'm just trying to move on from that."
Kevin Streelman and Charley Hoffman shared second place at 66 while Johnson Wagner, Jason Day and Marc Leishman all shot a 67. Day and Leishman started this event in good shape after being among those who seriously challenged for the title last week at the Masters.
Defending champion Carl Petterson shot a 68, as did current U.S. Open titleholder Webb Simpson.
The best finish for Davis this year has been a tie for sixth at the Houston Open.
Masters champion Adam Scott is not playing this week. Brandt Snedeker, who faded from contention a week ago after sharing the lead going into the final round, shot a 73 Thursday.
