NEW YORK, April 12 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball said Friday it has suspended Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco for eight games for intentionally throwing at a batter.

MLB said it has also fined Carrasco an undisclosed amount for an incident in Tuesday's 14-1 loss to the New York Yankees, in which Carrasco threw near and then hit Yankees infielder Kevin Youkilis.

Carrasco was ejected and the Indians Wednesday optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.

Carrasco could appeal the suspension but if it eventually takes effect, he will have to serve it in the majors.

The 26-year-old right-hander was suspended for six games in 2011 for throwing at Kansas City Royals DH Billy Butler.
