After Rosenthal worked a perfect inning, Mitchell Boggs put two runners on in the Milwaukee ninth. Boggs, however, escaped the jam to pick up his second save.

Former St. Louis pitcher Kyle Lohse (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings.

David Freese singled in the first run for the Cardinals in the second and Yadier Molina tacked on a home run in the seventh.
