NHL: Phoenix 4, Detroit 2

GLENDALE, Ariz., April 5 (UPI) -- Michael Stone ignited a three-goal Phoenix second period Thursday that rallied the Coyotes to a 4-2 victory over Detroit.

Phoenix jumped back into the playoff picture, which currently finds six teams -- the Coyotes and Red Wings among them -- separated by three points in the battle for the final two post-season spots in the Western Conference.

Valtteri Filppula scored on the power play for Detroit 1:56 into the contest, but the Coyotes took charge in the second period and then held off a late threat.

Stone tied it with a slap shot with 1:47 having elapsed in the second period, Chris Conner gave Phoenix the lead 7 minutes later and Shane Doan added his 12th of the season with 3:59 to go in the stanza.

Chad Johnson made 34 saves for Phoenix, but surrendered a power-play goal to Daniel Cleary with 1:13 left in the third that gave the Red Wings hope for an improbable rally.

Martin Hanzal then delivered an empty-net goal just before the final horn. Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots in taking the loss.
