Flames send Bouwmeester to Blues
CALGARY, Alberta, April 1 (UPI) -- The Calgary Flames have traded two-time all-star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues, the teams announced Monday.
Bouwmeester, 29, has scored six goals and notched nine assists in 33 games this year for the Flames, who are out of playoff contention in the Western Conference.
The Blues, however, are in a dogfight for the eighth and final post-season slot in the West, and moved to obtain the blueliner in exchange for a conditional first-round draft pick, defenseman Mark Cundari and goaltender Reto Berra.
If Bouwmeester helps St. Louis make the playoffs, the first-round pick will come in this year's draft. If not, Calgary gets a 2013 fourth-round pick and a 2014 first-round selection.
Bouwmeester, a 2002 first-round pick for Florida, has compiled 71 goals, 229 assists and 463 penalty minutes over 750 career games with the Panthers and Flames.
49ers obtain QB McCoy from Browns
SAN FRANCISCO, April 1 (UPI) -- Quarterback Colt McCoy is going from the Cleveland Browns to the San Francisco 49ers in a trade announced Monday.
The Browns sent the 25-year-old McCoy to the 49ers in exchange for a pair of undisclosed draft picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, the teams announced.
A former University of Texas standout, McCoy was drafted in the third round by Cleveland in 2010. He appeared in eight games that season, tossing for 1,576 yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The next year he started 13 games but was replaced by rookie Brandon Weeden in 2012.
Expected to serve as a backup to Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco, McCoy has thrown for 4,388 yards, 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions over 24 career contests.
Cirstea, Lepchenko post early S.C. wins
CHARLESTON, S.C., April 1 (UPI) -- Eleventh-seeded Sorana Cirstea posted a quick win and No. 12 Varvara Lepchenko also moved on Monday at the Family Circle Cup tennis event.
Romania's Cirstea reached the second round with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision over Tatjana Malek of Germany.
Lepchenko, meanwhile, needed three sets to put away fellow American Christina McHale 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 on the green clay at Daniel Island Tennis Center.
Thirteenth-seeded Austrian Tamira Paszek was trailing in her match against American qualifier Grace Min when she retired with an injury.
American wild card Bethanie Mattek-Sands also registered a win Monday, outslugging Anastasia Rodionova of Australia 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3).
Qualifier Mallory Burdette of the United States prevailed over France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-1, 1-6, 6-0, and Olga Govortsova of Belarus bested American Jamie Hampton 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 in other Family Circle matches.
No shooting damages for ex-Duquesne player
PITTSBURGH, April 1 (UPI) -- Former Duquesne University basketball player Shawn James, shot at a school dance in 2006, cannot recover damages from the school, a judge ruled.
James, of New York, sued to have the university pay for pain and loss of income caused by the shooting at the event, sponsored by the school's Black Student Union. He was shot in the foot, and recovered by 2009 to the extent he was playing professional basketball in Israel, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday.
U.S. District Judge David S. Cercone, in granting Duquesne's motion for summary judgment Saturday, ending the case, noted the school provided security at the dance, and met all its legal obligations.
