Louisville, Michigan reach NCAA Final Four
INDIANAPOLIS, March 31 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Louisville and No. 4 Michigan joined Wichita State and Syracuse in the 2013 NCAA Tournament Final Four after regional final wins Sunday.
In the day's first game, Nik Stauskas struck for 22 points and Michigan as posted 79-59 victory over Florida in the South Region final.
Stauskas went 6-for-6 from 3-point range and fellow freshman Mitch McGary provided 11 points and nine rebounds for Michigan (30-7), which reached the National Semifinal for the first time since 1993 -- a trip that was later voided due to NCAA violations.
Michigan will take on fourth-seeded East Region champion Syracuse April 6 in Atlanta.
Later Sunday, Russ Smith pumped in 23 points for Louisville, which used a second-half surge to best Duke 85-63 in the Midwest Region final.
Peyton Siva contributed 10 of his 16 points down the stretch as the Cardinals (33-5) overcame a gruesome injury to guard Kevin Ware and advanced to the Final Four for the second straight year.
Louisville now goes on to face ninth-seeded West Region champ Wichita State in the Final Four Saturday in Atlanta.
Penguins' Crosby out with broken jaw
PITTSBURGH, March 31 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain and leading NHL scorer Sidney Crosby has undergone jaw surgery and will be out indefinitely, the team said Sunday.
Pens General Manager Ray Shero told reporters he had visited Crosby in the hospital Sunday afternoon after the star center had undergone a procedure to repair a broken jaw from taking a puck to the face.
"I was surprised, he looked really good for what I was expecting," Shero said. "He was in good spirits, up and around.
"Over the next few days we'll see how things go and get some sort of time frame on it at some point. We'll try to update later in the week if we can."
Crosby was hurt during Saturday's 2-0 win over the New York Islanders, the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins' 15th consecutive triumph.
Shero said Crosby's jaw did not need to be wired, adding there hasn't been any sign of the concussion-like symptoms that have marred the superstar's career.
Crosby leads the NHL with 55 points, including 15 goals and 41 assists, in 36 games this season.
Padres' Headley to open season on DL
SAN DIEGO, March 31 (UPI) -- San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley will open the 2013 season on the disabled list, the team announced Sunday.
Headley fractured the tip of his left thumb while sliding into second base during a spring training game, jamming it into the bag while trying to break up a double play.
Headley led the National League in RBI last season with 115. The Gold Glove third baseman hit .286 with a career-best 31 homers over 161 games for the Padres in 2012.
San Diego also placed infielders James Darnell and Logan Forsythe on the 15-day disabled list while promoting 12-year MLB veteran utility infielder Cody Ransom and infielder Jedd Gyorko, drafted by the Padres in the second round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft out of West Virginia.
Yankees great Bob Turley dead at 82
ATLANTA, March 31 (UPI) -- Cy Young Award winner Bob Turley, a member of the New York Yankees of the 1950s, has died at a Georgia hospice, his family said. He was 82.
Turley was being treated for liver cancer when he died Saturday, his son, Terry, told The Baltimore Sun.
Turley was nicknamed "Bullet Bob" for his fastball, which he parlayed into 101 career wins and 1,265 strikeouts over a dozen seasons in the American League. The New York Times said equipment used in the days before portable radar guns measured his fastball in the 94-98 mph range.
Turley played for Yankees Manager Casey Stengel and teammates such as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Elston Howard and Yogi Berra. He was a member of a pitching staff that included Don Larsen and Whitey Ford.
Turley spent eight years with the Yankees and won the 1958 Cy Young Award and the World Series MVP award in the same year.
After his playing career ended in 1963, he went on to a successful career in the insurance and financial services industry, the Times said.
Louisville's Ware breaks leg in NCAA
INDIANAPOLIS, March 31 (UPI) -- Louisville guard Kevin Ware was hospitalized after gruesomely breaking a leg Sunday during the team's NCAA Midwest Region final.
Ware was hurt in the first half of the top-seeded Cardinals' contest against No. 2 Duke with Louisville leading 21-20 when he hurtled toward the sideline while contesting a 3-point try.
The sophomore landed awkwardly and suffered what Louisville officials confirmed was a broken leg, causing visible distress among his Louisville teammates as well as among Duke's players and other onlookers.
A reporter for the Burlington (N.C.) Times-Union, who was seated nearby, wrote via Twitter Ware's bone was visibly protruding from his leg.
After a long delay, Ware was removed from the sidelines on a stretcher.
Ware was resting comfortable at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after the injury, CBS Sports reported.
Louisville went on to best Duke and reach the NCAA Tournament's Final Four.
