PITTSBURGH, March 31 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain and leading NHL scorer Sidney Crosby has undergone jaw surgery and will be out indefinitely, the team said Sunday.
Pens General Manager Ray Shero told reporters he had visited Crosby in the hospital Sunday afternoon after the star center had undergone a procedure to repair a broken jaw from taking a puck to the face.
"I was surprised, he looked really good for what I was expecting," Shero said. "He was in good spirits, up and around.
"Over the next few days we'll see how things go and get some sort of time frame on it at some point. We'll try to update later in the week if we can."
Crosby was hurt during Saturday's 2-0 win over the New York Islanders, the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins' 15th consecutive triumph.
Shero said Crosby's jaw did not need to be wired, adding there hasn't been any sign of the concussion-like symptoms that have marred the superstar's career.
Crosby leads the NHL with 55 points, including 15 goals and 41 assists, in 36 games this season.
