EDMONTON, Alberta, March 31 (UPI) -- Taylor Hall notched a first-period hat trick and goalie Devan Dubnyk was flawless for Edmonton Saturday in the Oilers' 4-0 win over Vancouver.
Hall opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the contest and Ladislav Smid quickly made it 2-0 on the Oilers' second shot 2 minutes later, chasing starting Canucks goalie Cory Schneider.
Roberto Luongo then came into the game, but surrendered another Hall tally just 38 seconds later.
The Oilers left wing made it 4-0 with his third goal of the period at the 7:53 mark -- breaking Wayne Gretzky's 1986 club record for fastest hat trick to start a game.
Smid also added an assist while Dubnyk logged his second shutout of the season, stopping all 23 shots he faced.
Luongo ended up turning aside 20-of-22 shots for the Canucks, who fell percentage points behind Minnesota for the lead of the Northwest Division.
