NHL: Chicago 7, Detroit 1

DETROIT, March 31 (UPI) -- Brandon Saad had two goals and an assist Sunday and the Chicago Blackhawks used a big first period to humble Western Conference rival Detroit 7-1.

Saad scored the second in a flurry of three Blackhawks goals within the game's opening 4:12 -- the third being credited to Dave Bolland when Red Wings defenseman Jakub Kindl fired the puck into his own net.

Bolland finished with two goals while Jonathan Toews added a goal and two assists for the Blackhawks, who extended their league-best point total to 55 (26-5-3).

Nick Leddy and Jeremy Morin also scored for Chicago.

Corey Crawford had a shutout until Cory Emmerton dented him with 33 seconds remaining. He ended with 33 saves.

Jimmy Howard started in net and was pulled early in the second period after surrendering four goals on 14 shots for Detroit.

Jonas Gustavsson relieved was touched for three scores on 12 shots the rest of the way for the Red Wings, who hold he seventh seed in the West.
