NEW YORK, March 24 (UPI) -- Nicklas Backstrom's wrist shot in the fourth round of a shootout Sunday provided the difference in the Washington Capitals' 3-2 win over the New York Rangers.
After Braden Holtby made a save on the Rangers' Brad Richards in the top half of the fourth round, Backstrom moved in on Henrik Lundqvist and fired a wrister over his glove for the game-winner.
Backstrom provided a goal and an assist during regulation while Alex Ovechkin played a key role with scores in regulation and the shootout for the Caps.
Holtby finished with 30 saves as Washington compiled a third straight win.
Arron Asham returned from a injury absence with a tally for struggling New York, which fell for the fifth time in seven games. Derek Stepan scored and Lundqvist turned aside 22 shots.
