BILOXI, Miss., March 22 (UPI) -- Hal Sutton, despite playing the final five holes in 2-over, grabbed a share of the lead Friday after one round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic.
Sutton, Steve Elkington, Corey Pavin and Roger Chapman all shot a 3-under 69 at the Fallen Oak course to sit on top of a crowded leaderboard.
There were 22 players within two shots of the lead, including last week's Toshiba Classic winner David Frost.
Frost was in the group at 70, as was two-time major championship winner Mark O'Meara, while Bernard Langer was part of the large crowd at 71.
Sutton was 5-under for the day heading down the stretch Friday, but he bogeyed both the 14th and 18th holes to slip back.
Elkington, who like Sutton won the PGA Championship during his career on the regular tour, birdied the 18th to grab his share of the lead.
