Germany's Neureuther wins men's slalom

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland, March 17 (UPI) -- Germany's Felix Neureuther put together two solid runs Sunday to win the men's slalom at the World Cup Finals in Switzerland.

Neureuther led wire-to-wire with a combined-run time of 1 minute, 52.20 seconds, 0.36 seconds ahead of Austrian Marcel Hirscher, who had earlier clinched the season slalom title as well as the overall points championship.

"Marcel was always the man to beat this season and I hope to do that more often next year," said Neureuther. "I'm happy it's over now; my back hurts and I definitely feel like an old man who needs some rest."

Ivica Kostelic continued his late-season surge with a third place. The two Americans in the race -- Ted Ligety and David Chodounsky -- failed to finish the first run.
