Australian Grand Prix qualifying halted

MELBOURNE, March 16 (UPI) -- Qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix was postponed Saturday due to heavy rain in the Melbourne area.

The starting grid for the Formula One season opener will be finalized Sunday, weather permitting, at the Albert Circuit Park, in the hours before the scheduled start of the 58-lap race.

Saturday's qualifying was under way when the rains moved in. Six drivers were eliminated during the Q1 laps and a number of cars spin out on the wet track.

Cars belonging to star drivers Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Mark Webber of Red Bull were among those that spun out but were not damaged.
