WBC: United States 6, Italy 2

PHOENIX, March 10 (UPI) -- David Wright rallied the American squad with a grand slam Saturday and Team USA stayed alive in the World Baseball Classic with a 6-2 win over Italy.

Wright's blast in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 deadlock for the Americans, who also got RBI from Joe Mauer and Brandon Phillips at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Ryan Vogelsong (1-0) earned the victory, yielding six hits and striking out four over four innings.

Ross Detwiler shut Italy down on one hits over the last four innings to notch the save.

Italian reliever Marco Grifantini (0-1) was lit up for the grand slam, taking the loss.

Anthony Granato got Italy's only RBI.
