Tina Maze takes lead in slalom standings

OFFERSCHWANG, Germany, March 10 (UPI) -- Tina Maze of Slovenia took the lead in the women's World Cup slalom standings Sunday with a first place in Germany.

The victory at Offerschwang moved Maze past U.S. teen phenom Mikaela Shiffrin, who finished third Sunday behind Maze and Wendy Holdener of Switzerland.

Maze, who also leads the overall women's World Cup standings, turned in a combined-run time of 1 minute, 52.85 seconds. Shiffrin, who led after the first run, finished with a 1:53.60.

"Slalom is the most difficult of the five disciplines in my opinion and if you race in all of them, you don't get much time to train," Maze said. "But I trained hard all this week to make sure I could compete with Mikaela and the other (slalom) specialists."

Shiffrin, 17, still has a chance to win the season slalom championship at next week's World Cup Finals in Lenzerheid, Switzerland.
