NHL: New York Islanders 5, Washington 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y., March 9 (UPI) -- John Tavares scored twice in the third period Saturday, powering the New York Islanders to a 5-2 win over Washington.

Tavares netted his 15th goal of the season on a power play 12:13 into the frame, breaking a 2-2 tie, and added his 16th goal 30 seconds later.

Frans Nielsen provided a goal and an assist while Josh Bailey and Casey Cizikas also scored for the Islanders, who continued a playoff push with their third victory in four games.

Evgeni Nabokov turned aside 22 shots.

Joel Ward and Nicklas Backstrom each scored and Philipp Grubauer made 40 saves in his first NHL start for the Capitals, whose three-game winning streak was snapped.
