Cepelova, Beck take Florianopolis wins

FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Slovakian Jana Cepelova and Annika Beck of Germany opened the WTA Brazil Tennis Cup Sunday with first-round victories.

Cepelova notched a straight-set triumph over Brazilian Paula Cristina Goncalves 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in one of the opening-day main draw matches at Federacao Catarinense de Tenis.

She now goes on to the second round where she'll face Beck, who advanced with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 decision over Brazil's Maria Fernanda Alves.

Former world No. 1 Venus Williams is the top seed in the tournament.
