Syracuse records 38th straight home win
SYRACUSE, N.Y., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- C.J. Fair and James Southerland led a hot shooting effort Wednesday that carried No. 8 Syracuse to an 84-59 pummeling of Providence.
It was the 38th straight home win for the Orange, the longest current streak in major college basketball.
Both Fair and Southerland scored 20 points while Syracuse shot 58 percent as a team. The Orange limited Providence to 16 points during the first half and built a 27-point lead.
Providence had won four in a row, a stretch that included victories over Cincinnati and Notre Dame.
Michael Carter-Williams added 15 points and 12 assists for Syracuse (22-4, 10-3 Big East), a winner of four of its last five games.
The Friars (14-12, 6-8) were paced by LaDontae Henton and Vincent Council with 15 points each.
Pacers rout New York with big first half
INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Paul George ignited Indiana to a huge first half Wednesday and the Pacers coasted to a 125-91 victory over New York.
Indiana stormed to a 74-44 halftime advantage with George totaling 27 points.
The Knicks lost their third in a row, making just 5-of-28 from 3-point range and sending the Pacers to the foul line 39 times.
David West contributed 18 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers while Lance Stephenson had 14 points.
Indiana hit 53 percent of its shots from the field, recorded nine blocks and outrebounded the Knicks by 15.
Tyson Chandler led New York with 19 points and 11 boards.
Snow halts play at WGC match play
MARANA, Ariz., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- More than an inch of snow fell on the Golf Club at Dove Mountain Wednesday, halting the opening round of the Accenture Match Play Championship.
None of the 32 first-round matches could be finished before the storm rolled through and none of the top four seeds -- Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Luke Donald and Louis Oosthuizen -- had teed off when play was suspended.
The action was scheduled to resume at 10:30 a.m. EST Thursday with the second round matches expected to begin later in the day.
"We got this freak snow storm," PGA Tour tournament director Mark Russell said. "Even if it melted in the next hour or so, the golf course would not be ready to play for another hour or an hour and a half after that.
"We just couldn't play. Rather than keep the players around here, we just made a decision that we're going to come back tomorrow and finish the first matches."
Sergio Garcia, playing in the first match of the day, had a 2-up lead through 15 holes against Thongchai Jaidee and was facing a putt to close out the match when play was stopped.
There were 21 matches on the course when the suspension came. McIlroy, who missed the cut in his only other appearance of the 2013 season, was scheduled to face Shane Lowry. Woods will meet Charles Howell III.
The biggest surprise in the early going had seen Jason Day take a 6-up lead through 10 holes against former Masters champion Zach Johnson.
Charl Schwartzel was all square with 2013 tour winner Russell Henley through 11 holes and Bubba Watson was all square with Chris Wood through six.
Hunter Mahan had moved 4-up in front of Matteo Manassero through nine while Richard Sterne had a 3-up advantage over Jason Dufner through 10.
Police: Josh Brent speeding before crash
DALLAS, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was driving as fast as 134 mph before his car rolled over, killing teammate Jerry Brown Jr., police documents indicate.
An Irving, Texas, police report obtained by KXAS-TV, Dallas/Fort Worth, said Brent's blood-alcohol level content was more than twice the legal limit in the Dec. 7 crash, and neither Brent nor Brown was wearing a seat belt at the moment the car struck a curb and overturned.
Investigators concluded Brent's car reached speeds of 134 mph after he and Brown drove away from a Dallas nightclub.
Brent told police the vehicle's steering was a "little shaky" but investigators found nothing wrong with the car, and at least three Dallas Area Rapid Transit surveillance cameras captured images of the car as it sped through Dallas and Irving.
Brent was charged with intoxicated manslaughter in Brown's death. He is free on bond and his attorney said the case could go to trial this summer.
