FORT MYERS, Fla., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Boston Red Sox utilityman Pedro Ciriaco says his right shoulder, injured in winter ball, has improved and he is ready for spring training.
Ciriaco, one of the Red Sox' few bright spots last season, played third base after an injury to starter Will Middlebrooks, but is expected to get practice in the outfield during the spring, the Boston Globe reported Monday, noting for the first time in his career Ciriaco could stay with one club all season.
"That part is exciting," he said. "I've had to fight to make teams my entire career."
Daniel Nava is playing first base in drills and fielding practices, a position he last played in junior college.
"The more I work there, the better it feels. The things I learned about the position way back in college are coming back to me," Nava said.
The Red Sox are also looking closely at pitcher Clayton Mortensen, who must either make the roster or be subjected to waivers, the newspaper said.
