Flacco leads Ravens to Super Bowl title
NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Joe Flacco fired three touchdown passes Sunday and Baltimore held off a furious San Francisco comeback try to hang on for a 34-31 win in Super Bowl XLVII.
Flacco went 22-of-33 for 287 passing yards -- connecting with Anquan Boldin, Dennis Pitta and Jacoby Jones on first-half scores -- and Jones returned the second-half kickoff 108 yards for another TD, giving the Ravens a 28-6 lead.
But a 34-minute delay caused by a partial power outage, the 49ers, behind Colin Kaepernick, stormed back to score 23 of the next 26 points, getting back into the game.
Justin Tucker, however, booted a pair of fourth-quarter field goals to help stave off the rally and the Ravens emerged with their second NFL championship and first since 2000.
Kaepernick's last-chance drive fell short when his fourth-and-goal pass to Michael Crabtree from the Ravens' 5-yard line was overthrown in the end zone and Baltimore used up the rest of the clock to deny the 49ers another opportunity.
Boldin finished with six grabs for 104 yards and Ray Rice ran the ball 20 times for 59 yards.
Kaepernick tossed for 302 yards of 16-of-28 efficiency with a touchdown and interception, and also scored on 15-yard run for San Francisco, which was seeking its first Super Bowl title since 1994.
Frank Gore amassed 110 rushing yards on 19 carries with a score for the 49ers.
Mickelson wraps up dominating Phoenix win
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Phil Mickelson finished up a dominating performance at the Phoenix Open Sunday, firing a 4-under-par 67 for a six-stroke victory in his 41st career win.
Mickelson carded five birdies in the final round at TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course to end at 28-under 256, which tied for the second-lowest score ever in a 72-hole PGA Tour event.
The left-hander just missed notching a 59 in Thursday's first round and never trailed in taking the Phoenix event for the third time. He also won it 1996 and 2005.
Brandt Snedeker claimed second place at 24-under with a round of 6-under 65.
Scott Piercy charged into sole possession of third place at minus-23 with a 10-under 61 Sunday.
One shot further back in fourth place was Ryan Moore (65), while Ryan Palmer (62) finished in fifth at minus-19.
Querrey salvages Davis Cup win for U.S.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Sam Querrey defeated Thiago Alves in the fifth match Sunday to turn back a Brazil comeback and salvage a win for the United States in Davis Cup play.
Brazil trailed 2-0 in the first-round series after dropping both of Friday's single matches, but stayed alive Saturday when the doubles team of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares bounced the top-ranked American tandem of Bob and Mike Bryan.
Then on Sunday, Thomaz Bellucci come from behind to stun John Isner 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-3 in the first reverse singles contest to pull Brazil even at 2-2 and set up a decisive fifth match.
Querrey, however, finally put the United States into April's quarterfinals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (6-3) triumph over Alves, firing 26 aces in a 2-hour, 37-minute effort.
The 32-time champion Americans -- who fell to Spain in last year's semifinals -- now go on to meet Serbia in the quarters.
Charlotte's Kidd-Gilchrist has concussion
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Charlotte Bobcats rookie forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has been diagnosed with a concussion after taking a hard fall during a game, the team said Sunday.
Kidd-Gilchrist was hospitalized Saturday after crashing to the floor in the third quarter of Charlotte's loss to the Houston Rockets following a collision with teammate Jeff Taylor while trying to stop Toney Douglas' fast-break layup.
After laying motionless on the floor for several minutes, the rookie was put on a stretcher while his head and neck were secured.
The second overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft was then taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital via ambulance.
The team said in an update Kidd-Gilchrist underwent precautionary X-rays and a CT scan, all of which were negative for head and neck injuries.
He does have a concussion and remained hospitalized overnight for observation, the Bobcats said.
