ASTANA, Kazakhstan, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Andrey Golubev posted his second singles win of the weekend in clinching a Davis Cup series win for Kazakhstan Sunday over Austria.

Golubev defeated Jurgen Melzer 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 and gave the Kazakhs a 3-1 lead in the best-of-five, first-round series. The fifth match wasn't played. They will face the defending Davis Cup champion Czech Republic in April's Davis Cup quarterfinals.

Golubev opened the Austria-Kazakh series with a straight-set win Friday over Andreas Haider-Maurer and a win by Evgeny Korolev over Melzer put the Kazakhs up 2-0. But Austrians Julian Knowle and Alexander Peya beat Golubev and Yuri Schukin in Saturday's doubles to keep the series going.

Melzer had the only break of the first set Sunday but Golubev evened things with the lone break of the second set.

The third set again turned on one break -- at love in the seventh game -- with Golubev saving a pair of break points. Golubev won more than two-thirds of the points in the fourth set, including getting breaks in the fourth and sixth games in advancing the Kazakhs.
