NHL: Carolina 1, Ottawa 0

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Dan Ellis stopped 33 shots to record the 13th shutout of his career Friday, carrying Carolina to a 1-0 victory over Ottawa.

The game's lone goal came from Eric Staal, who scored with 4:15 remaining in the first period. Carolina won for the third time in four games.

Staal's goal came on a redirection of a shot by Alexander Semin that sailed over the shoulder of Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson.

Anderson made 34 saves, but they were not enough to bring the Senators a third straight victory.

Ottawa will be playing without center Jason Spezza indefinitely after it was determined this week that he needs surgery to repair a herniated disk. Spezza has two goals and three assists this season.

The Hurricanes will now embark on a six-game road trip that begins Saturday in Philadelphia.
