Report: Grizzlies trade Gay to Raptors
MEMPHIS, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The Memphis Grizzles have struck a deal to send forward Rudy Gay and center Hamed Haddadi to Toronto in a three-way trade, USA Today reported Wednesday.
Citing a person with knowledge of the deal, the newspaper said guard Jose Calderon, forward Ed Davis and a second-round draft pick were shipped to Memphis, with the Grizzlies then sending Calderon to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for forwards Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye.
The Grizzlies originally obtained Gay in 2006 shortly after he was taken by the Houston Rockets with the eighth overall choice in the NBA Draft. He sports career averages of 17.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Calderon, meanwhile, had recently expressed a desire leave the Raptors, for whom he has played his entire seven-year NBA career.
The Spain native -- who was set to become a free agent after this season -- has averaged 10.0 points and 7.2 assists over 525 career games with Toronto.
The Grizzlies this month also traded Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future first-round pick to Cleveland for forward Jon Leuer.
That deal allowed Memphis to unload $6 million in salary and avoid paying a $4 million NBA luxury tax this season.
Michigan downs Northwestern for 20th win
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Trey Burke helped Michigan dominate the first half Wednesday and the No. 2 Wolverines rolled over Northwestern 68-46.
Michigan began the evening tied for the lead with Indiana in the Big Ten Conference and protected its share of the top of spot by limiting Northwestern to 21 first-half points.
Burke scored 18 points in pushing the Wolverines to their 20th win of the season. Michigan hit 52 percent of its field goal attempts and went on runs of nine and eight points in the opening 20 minutes.
Glenn Robinson III added 13 points and Nik Stauskas had 11. Mitch McGary came off the bench to grab 14 rebounds.
Michigan (20-1, 7-1 Big Ten) has won four in a row since experiencing its lone loss of the season to Ohio State Jan. 13 and will travel to Indiana for one of college basketball's key games of the year Saturday.
Alex Olah scored 10 points and was the only player in double figures for Northwestern (12-10, 3-6).
Super Bowl teams return to practice field
NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Blustery weather Wednesday forced the San Francisco 49ers to move their first practice session of Super Bowl week indoors.
The 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, who will meet Sunday in the 47th Super Bowl, had contingency plans ready in case of poor conditions. San Francisco, however, was the only team to put its alternate plans in action.
"We were going to go outside and practice but the winds were a little too much,'' San Francisco Coach Jim Harbaugh said.
The 49ers are working out this week at the home facility of the New Orleans Saints, a complex that includes an indoor practice field. The Ravens are holding their workouts at Tulane University, where there is no indoor facility.
If the Baltimore coaches had chosen to practice indoors, the Ravens would have had to use the Saints' headquarters after the San Francisco workout had been completed.
The Ravens, however, went through their practice as scheduled.
All 53 players for both teams practiced Wednesday, including two Baltimore starters who have recently been nursing injuries -- linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and tight end Dennis Pitta. Both are expected to play Sunday.
Neither team had gone through a full practice session since winning their conference championship games Jan. 19.
Singh admits using deer antler spray
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Jan. 30 (UPI) -- PGA golfer Vijay Singh admitted Wednesday he used a controversial deer antler spray but said he didn't know it contained a banned growth hormone.
Singh and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis were named in a Sports Illustrated story this week as users of the spray -- derived from fast-growing deer antler velvet and containing small amounts of IGF-1, which is banned by the NFL and the PGA Tour.
Lewis, in New Orleans for the Ravens' Super Bowl battle against San Francisco Sunday, denied Wednesday he used the spray.
Singh -- described in the SI story as a "vocal supporter" of the spray -- said in a statement he has used the product but "at no time was I aware that it may contain a substance that is banned under the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Policy."
"In fact, when I first received the product, I reviewed the list of ingredients and did not see any prohibited substances," Singh said. "I am absolutely shocked that deer antler spray may contain a banned substance and am angry that I have put myself in this position."
Singh added he is "cooperating fully with their review of this matter."
The 50-year-old remains in the field for this week's Phoenix Open.
