Woods claims 8th win at Torrey Pines
LA JOLLA, Calif., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods struggled down the stretch but managed to hang on for his 75th career victory with an even-par 72 Monday to claim the Farmers Insurance Open.
Woods, who held a six-stroke lead when fourth-round play resumed Monday, carded two bogeys and a double-bogey late in the round but still finished with a four-shot margin of victory at 14-under-par 274.
The win was the eighth of his career at Torrey Pines -- the most for any golfer at a single course in PGA Tour history -- and moved him within seven of Sam Snead's overall career win total.
The tournament finished Monday after thick fog all but wiped out play Saturday.
Finishing tied for second at minus-10 were defending champion Brandt Snedeker and Josh Teater, both of whom carded 3-under 69s.
One stroke further back were 2009 winner Nick Watney and Jimmy Walker (71 each), while Robert Garrigus (67), Rickie Fowler (68) and Aaron Baddeley (69) ended knotted for fifth at 8-under 280.
Dodgers, Time Warner Cable sign TV deal
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers and Time Warner Cable announced Monday they have agreed to form a new regional cable television network called SportsNet LA.
Under the estimated $7 billion deal, telecasts of Dodgers games will anchor the network's programming when it debuts in 2014, pending approval from Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The team's local broadcasts will continue to be shown on Fox Sports through the coming season.
"The launch of the new regional sports network is a historic development for the Dodgers and our passionate fans," Dodgers Chief Executive Officer Stan Kasten said. "Our commitment from day one has been to build the Dodgers into the best team possible, both on and off the field."
The costly deal is likely to add $5 per month to bills of customers of cable and satellite providers that carry the channel, whether they watch sports or not.
That could trigger legislation to protect consumers, analysts told the Times.
U.S. panel pressures NFLPA on HGH tests
WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Congressional leaders Monday indicated they will bypass the NFL players union and question players directly about the use of human growth hormone.
Ranking Republican and Democratic members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform told NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith they're determined to talk to players about HGH use in the sport, The Washington Post reported.
The union, which maintains HGH use isn't a problem among players, has been negotiating with the league for two years on the rules for a blood-testing program, which was agreed to in its 2011 collective bargaining agreement.
"While NFLPA management may not believe that HGH is a problem in the NFL, the words of your athletes suggest otherwise," Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and Elijah Cummings, D-Md., wrote to Smith in a letter released Monday.
"... Although you have requested previously that we communicate directly with the NFLPA on these matters, we now ask that you and your staff not interfere with our efforts to communicate directly with the players or their personal counsel," the letter stated.
The NFLPA is asking the NFL to perform a population study to determine what levels of HGH would constitute a positive test, further delaying an agreement, the Post said.
Fans send Ravens off with harbor rally
BALTIMORE, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Thousands of cheering fans braved ice and rain in Baltimore Monday to send the NFL's Ravens off to Super Bowl XLVII with a loud rally.
The team, led by Coach John Harbaugh, emerged from buses at 12:15 p.m. and took the stage at Harborplace Amphitheater to cheers before departing for New Orleans, where they will play San Francisco for the NFL title Sunday, the Baltimore Sun reported.
"There is no Ravens without you guys," linebacker Ray Lewis told the crowd. "We're not going to New Orleans for nothing else but to bring a ring back to Baltimore."
Lewis -- the longtime face of the Ravens franchise -- has announced he is retiring after the game.
Harbaugh, meanwhile, called Ravens fans "the best in the world" and safety Ed Reed led the throng in chants of "Baltimore" before the squad left the stage amid a fireworks display.
The team's plane later arrived in New Orleans with a purple Ravens flag held up against the cockpit window by one of the pilots, NFL.com reported.
