NHL: St. Louis 6, Detroit 0

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Vladimir Tarasenko celebrated his first NHL game with two goals Saturday and the St. Louis Blues opened their season with a 6-0 drubbing of Detroit.

Chris Stewart also scored twice and T.J. Oshie helped out with a goal and two assists for the defending Central Division champion Blues.

Patrik Berglund added a tally and Jaroslav Halak had to make only 14 saves en route to his 23rd career shutout for St. Louis, which fell in the second round to eventual Stanley Cup winner Los Angeles in last season's playoffs.

The Red Wings -- who suffered a first-round exit at the hands of Nashville in the 2011-12 post-season -- got 23 saves on 28 shots faced by Jimmy Howard.
