Federer, Murray advance in straight sets

MELBOURNE, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Roger Federer and world No. 3-ranked Andy Murray both claimed straight-set wins Thursday in second-round play of the Australian Open.

Federer advanced with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Nikolay Davydenko and Murray took out Joao Sousa 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

Federer won a healthy 73 percent of the points on serve and didn't face a break point. He was able to finish off three of his 13 break-point opportunities. However, he did have 42 unforced errors, nearly half the 86 points Davydenko won on the day.

Murray also didn't see a break point and won 74 percent of the points when serving. He had 22 unforced errors against 28 winners. He finished off five breaks in eight break-point opportunities.

No. 6-seeded Juan Martin del Porto had 22 aces and just 18 unforced errors in a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Benjamin Becker and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the seventh seed, eliminated Go Soeda 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, piling up 44 winners along the way.

Also in the second round, ninth-seeded Richard Gasquet topped Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-2, 6-2; No. 12-seeded Marin Cilic won 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 over Rajeev Ram; 13th-seeded Milos Raonic defeated Lukas Rosol 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, 6-3; and No. 14th Gilles Simon got by Jesse Levin 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Other seeded players advancing included No. 17 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 21 Andreas Seppi.

Ricardas Berankis eliminated 25th-seeded Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 and Jeremy Chardy ousted No. 30-seeded Marcel Granollers 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in Thursday's upsets.

In second-round matches pitting unseeded players against each other, Bernard Tomic defeated Daniel Brands in a four-set battle that included three tiebreakers and a 7-5 set; Gael Monfils got by Lu Yen-Hsun 8-6 in the fifth set; Blaz Kavcic edged James Duckworth 10-8 in the fifth; and Ivan Dodig advanced over Jarkko Nieminen 6-1 in the fifth.

Tomic's win puts him against Federer in the third round while Murray next draws Berankis.
