Chargers name Colts Telesco as new GM

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The San Diego Chargers have hired Indianapolis Colts Vice President Tom Telesco to be the new general manager, the team announced.

The Chargers scheduled a news conference Wednesday to officially announce the hiring of Telesco, currently vice president of football operations for the Colts, as the replacement for A.J. Smith.

One of Telesco's top priorities will be hiring a new head coach to replace Norv Turner, who was let go along with Smith at the end of the regular season.

Telesco, 40, spent 15 years with the Colts and was considered a key adviser to General Manager Ryan Grigson, The San Diego Union-Tribune said.

Telesco was selected by a four-man search committee led by team president Dean Spanos. Among the other candidates was Jimmy Raye, director of player personnel who had been interim GM since Smith's departure.
